《十通》是十部書名中帶有“通”字的古典文獻。最初有唐代杜佑所撰的《通典》,後有宋代鄭樵所撰的《通志》、元代馬端臨所撰的《文獻通考》、清高宗敕撰的《續通典》、《續通志》、《續文獻通考》、《清朝通典》、《清朝通志》、《清朝文獻通考》和近代劉錦藻所撰的《清朝續文獻通考》,共分為“三通典”、“三通志”、“四通考”,後人稱為“十通”。

系統完整地記錄了中國歷代典章制度沿革發展,對於文史研究者而言非常重要。目前比較易得的十通版本,一為縮印清代木刻本,版本較好,卻並無電子版。一為文淵閣四庫全書本,由於是抄本,內容訛誤難免。本資料庫以清代木刻本為基礎而製成,校勘精嚴,值得信賴,可謂嘉惠學林。

現世傳線裝本“涵芬樓秘笈”共計十集十函。每函訂為八冊,藍色函套,函左上題簽作“涵芬樓秘笈第幾集”,各書尺寸統一,凡影印之書皆按   原書樣式縮印,以最大限度地保留原貌。凡鉛印之書版式也基本相同,多為半頁十行,每行字數從廿字到廿二字不等,四周雙欄,上下黑口,單黑魚尾。

版心中一般鐫有該書題名簡稱,卷次和頁次。 “涵芬樓秘笈”與“四部叢刊”選本原則不同,“四部叢刊”重版本優劣,以宋元舊槧,明代佳刻善本為影印底本的選本原則,而“涵芬樓秘笈”則重稀見抄稿本,部頭適中,講究文獻流傳價值的選本原則。

“四部叢刊”底本來源非以涵芬樓館藏為主,大量利用館外同時知名藏家善本。“四部叢刊”所用底本,根據孫毓修撰“四部叢刊書錄”(初編)匯總系來自34位藏書家或藏書機構,總計323種。其中選自涵芬樓藏書為底本的145種,僅佔全部的45%不到。而“涵芬樓秘笈”為了取其便利並節約成本,絕大部分取自涵芬樓藏書。

清代外交檔案三編由三大部分組成:
  • 清代對外條約:作為外交成果,最終國與國達成的共識要落實到文字上,也就是雙方簽署的條約。資料不僅涵蓋自清康熙至宣統歷朝所簽訂的對外條約,同時收錄了相關條約清帝的有關上諭及臣工的奏陳,對於全面完整瞭解清代外交事務具有重大的説明。條約分國別依時序編排而成,史料脈絡清晰。
  • 清中後期各國照會目錄:自民國二十四年故宮文獻館編輯彙集了道、、同、光四朝各國照會3872件,計有英、法、美、俄、日、德、意、和、比、丹、布、奧、巴西、大西洋、秘魯等十數國。此項文書,多為《籌辦夷務始末》及《清季外交史料》所不載,與近代外交史關係密切,因按國編年,逐件摘由,編制詳目。 目錄編制按照不同國家分別加以區隔,再依時間順序開列照會提要。
  • 總理衙門外交檔案:採自清豐朝總理各國事務衙門孤本外交卷宗檔案。其不同於軍機處的涉外檔案,內容涉及俄、英、美、法、德、日、比、等國,包括鐵路、礦山、銀行、郵電、航運、海關、外貿、華工等領域,非常值得有關學者、學生研究利用。

《籌辦夷務始末》綜計三朝籌辦夷務始末內容,凡中外關係史上的重要事件,前後包括了起鴉片戰爭前夕訖同治十三年十二月約三十九年間清政府對外關係各方面(政治、經濟、文化等)的重要檔案資料約九千三百件,凡近代中外關係史上所有的重要事件和問題,如第一、二次鴉片戰爭、中法戰爭、中外勾結鎮壓太平軍情況、沙俄強佔中國東北土地、租界問題、教案問題等等,都有所反映。從中可以窺見清政府最高統治者在諸種問題上所採取的策略以及態度變化的過程,是研究中國近代史必不可缺的基本資料。

硃卷是記載清代科舉考試的歷史文獻,但隨著清末科舉制度的廢除,以及內憂外患,這方面的資料散失嚴重。為了保存文化典籍 ,張元濟、葉景葵等在上海創建了合眾圖書館。並從海鹽朱氏壽鑫齋購買其所藏的2000冊硃卷,後又有吳縣潘氏硯樓捐贈了1000餘冊。到了二十世紀五十年代,合眾圖書館改為上海市歷史文獻圖書館,後又與上海圖書館合併。此後仍不斷收集,到九十年代初共8000餘冊。本集成計收有清代硃卷八千餘種。清代文武百官履歷、傳記、譜系、撰述、行誼盡收於此,時間跨越從康熙到光緒年間的鄉試、會試、五貢等硃卷。
