"香港金融業的歷史，最早可追溯到19世紀中葉香港開埠之初本。香港金融業的發展，首先是從外資銀行業的進入開始的。當時，它們的業務主要是從事對華貿易的外資洋行提供融資和匯兌服務，本地客戶只限於規模較大的華資商行及少數殷商富戶，與華人社會鮮有聯系。20世紀初，香港轉口貿易和商業蓬勃發展，華人行商對使用押匯和信用證、支票的需求急增。在這種歷史背景下，一批將西方銀行先進經營方法與傳統銀號結合起來的華資銀行應運而生。不過，踏入1950年代，香港銀行業的業務發生重大轉變，從過去戰前單純的貿易融資逐漸向為迅速發展的制造業和新興的房地產業提供貸款，而推動這一轉變的最根本原因則是戰後香港經濟的轉型。" --
