Shiwan Pottery - Mr. Liu Zemian's Work: Eighteen Arhats
Liu Zemian (1937-) was born into a four-generation heritage of pottery art and is a representative inheritor of Shiwan Art Pottery, as well as a master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. Liu Zemian began creating the "Eighteen Arhats" in 1980. Along with his brother Liu Bing and son Liu Zhaojin, they formed a team and visited Buddhist statue art treasures such as the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan, the Qiongzhu Temple in Yunnan, and the Nanhua Temple in Guangdong to study ancient sculptures. They made over 160 small clay drafts and carefully selected and refined them to ultimately sculpt 18 arhats with different postures and distinctive personalities. The original works "Eighteen Arhats" were completed in 1981. In 1990, the work won the highest award, the "Treasure Award," in the National Arts and Crafts Competition and was collected by the China National Arts and Crafts Museum. In 1992, a nearly 1-meter tall version of the "Eighteen Arhats" was presented by the provincial government as a gift to the Dhammakaya Temple in Thailand.
The "Eighteen Arhats" collection held by Hong Kong Shue Yan University Library is a fine work produced by Shiwan Fine Arts Ceramics Factory. Fine works refers to works that are created by using the original work as a mold to produce the basic prototype, and then refined by the ceramic artist himself.
