- Help the publications to reach the new readers, not just those with easy access to a research library
- Greater visibility can result in increased readership and citations of the research article.
- Open Access allows to share the research worldwide with no restrictions or paywalls. The work will be freely available to those who can't access the scription content.
There are different ways to make an output open access, and the method you choose may vary depending on where you want to publish your research output.
There are three common types of open-access publishing, known as Gold, Green and Diamond Open Access.
Pressbooks.pub, 2022

Gold OA – This form of Open Access permanently makes the final published version of the record freely available immediately upon publication by the publisher at the point of publication (i.e., the journal itself, not in a repository). Gold Open Access frequently requires payment of an article processing charge (APC), which may be paid by authors or subsidized by a third party such as a funding council – however, payment is not a necessary characteristic of Gold Open Access; it simply means that the article is free for readers to access from the journal itself under a Creative Commons license.
Green OA involves making a version of the manuscript freely available in a repository. The publisher usually sets an embargo period, such as 6, 12, or even 24 months. No charges are paid.

If you are affiliated with Hong Kong Shue Yan University you can publish your article Open Access - at no cost to you - in gold and hybrid journals. In addition, you can enjoy access to Cambridge University Press journals content.
Easily check your eligibility to publish OA under this agreement, and the journals available to you, by using our OA Waiver & Discount checker tool.
To be eligible, articles must:
- Have a corresponding author affiliated with Hong Kong Shue Yan University.
- Be original research – eligible article types are research articles, review articles, rapid communications, brief reports and case reports.
- Be accepted for publication in a Cambridge University Press journal covered by the agreement.
- Be accepted for publication from 1 January 2024.
While the Library does NOT provide funding for APCs, we have negotiated a number of open-access publishing agreements with publishers. HKSYU-affiliated corresponding authors can now publish their articles open access in journals with APCs waived or discounted as part of deals referred to as "Read & Publish" or "Transformative" agreements.
You need to use your HKSYU affiliation and HKSYU email address in your submitted article. Publishers will normally notify you of the agreement, if available, at the submission or acceptance stage, and your request will be sent to the Library for review and approval.

How to submit your publications into ACM Open?
Procedure
Manuscript Submission
1. Follow the article submission workflow as usual. It is suggested that you use the HKSYU affiliation, address, and email for your account registration and manuscript submission.
Please review the details at https://authors.acm.org/journals/submission-process for the submission process.
How to submit the publications onto ACM Open?
Step 1:
Click on the title which you would like to submit from ACM Full-Text Collection webpage.
Select “Submission Site” under authors.
Step 2:
Use your Shue Yan webmail to create the account and login.
Step 3:
Start New Submission. Your publications must be formatted using the ACM authoring template.
Step 4:
When the corresponding author (the author who received the email with the link to the eRights form) clicks on the link to the eRights form, they are brought to an edit screen. Suppose the paper is part of the ACM Open Program. In that case, the ACM Open Edit Screen will have a line saying, “This paper is part of the ACM Open Program.” (The eRights system recognizes the corresponding author is from a participating institution based on the email domain provided to us by the institution’s administrator). If the corresponding author changes their email address from their institutional domain to a non-institutional domain*, their paper will no longer be part of the ACM Open Program.
The corresponding author should confirm all information on the edit screen to ensure the title and author information are correct. Once the corresponding author has reviewed the information and determines it is accurate, they should click on the check box and then click on the Proceed to eRights Form button:
*Authors may change their email address because they are no longer at the institution and do not have access to that email inbox anymore.
