Research consultation is a scheduled appointment with our librarians for individualized, one-on-one assistance with library research: it is designed to assist you with the process and techniques that will enable you to conduct your research more efficiently and successfully.
All HKSYU undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible for the Research Consultation Services. Our Librarians will assist you in:
1. developing effective research techniques
2. locating the information needed for your specific topic and assignment
3. acknowledging the sources of information

- work with you to develop search strategies that best suit your topic and focus
- provide tips on how to narrow a search that is finding too much, or expand a search that is not finding enough
- help you develop different strategies that are best suited to different databases.
2. Accessing services and resources provided by HKSYU and other libraries
We will…
- demonstrate how to effectively use the online catalog, electronic databases and the Internet resources and may suggest relevant books, periodicals and web sites
- introduce services that can help you access the resources provided by other Hong Kong universities libraries such as Inter-Library-Loan and External Reader Card Service.
3. Acknowledging the sources of information

- let you know what is plagiarism
- introduce different formats of references such as APA, MLA, etc.

- Actual research, gathering and selecting materials

Consultation sessions usually last for 1 hour. If needed, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled.

Complete and submit the Research Consultation Appointment Form to make an appointment with our Librarians at least two working days before each session time begins. You will then be contacted to confirm your appointment time. If you have not been contacted within 5 days, please call the Circulation and Information Services Section at 2806-5113.
Please note that you need to arrive on time for your appointment; report to the service counter on the 3rd floor of the Library. If you are late, your session time will be shortened and if you are late for 15 minutes or more, your session will be cancelled.
If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, please call the Circulation and Information Services Section at 2806-5113 as soon as possible so that your time can be allocated to someone else and so that your consultation may be rescheduled if it is still needed.
